What is Podiatry?

Podiatry, also known as podiatric medicine, is a branch of healthcare that specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of foot, ankle, and lower limb disorders, injuries, and diseases. Podiatrists are medical professionals who are specifically trained and licensed to provide medical and surgical care for foot and ankle problems.

Podiatrists work with patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly, and treat a wide range of conditions, including heel pain, bunions, corns and calluses, ingrown toenails, flat feet, plantar fasciitis, foot and ankle injuries, and diabetic foot care. They also specialize in the biomechanics of the foot and lower limb, providing orthotics and other devices to help patients maintain proper alignment and gait. In addition, podiatrists can provide education and advice on proper foot care, footwear, and injury prevention.

Orthotics

Orthotics are medical devices that are designed to provide support, cushioning, and correction to the feet, ankles, and legs. They are typically prescribed by a healthcare professional, to treat a variety of conditions related to the feet and lower extremities.

Orthotics can be used to address a wide range of foot and ankle problems, including plantar fasciitis, flat feet, high arches, and heel spurs. They can also be used to correct alignment issues, such as overpronation or supination, which can lead to knee, hip, and back pain.

Orthotics can help by providing additional support and cushioning to the feet, which can reduce pain and improve function. They can also help to redistribute pressure and weight across the foot, which can alleviate discomfort and prevent further injury.

Orthotics are typically custom-made to fit the individual needs of the patient, and may be made from a variety of materials, including foam, rubber, and plastic. They can be worn in a variety of footwear, including athletic shoes, dress shoes, and sandals.
